Have you been asked to be a Godparent for a child being baptized or a Sponsor for someone receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation?

We are grateful that you have been invited to take on this important role in someone’s faith journey.

Before requesting a Sacramental Sponsorship Certificate, please review the following requirements. A Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor must:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Be a fully initiated Catholic, having received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
  • Be a practicing Catholic who regularly attends Sunday Mass and participates in the sacramental life of the Church, including the Eucharist and Reconciliation.
  • Be living a life in harmony with the Catholic faith and the responsibilities of serving as a Godparent or Sponsor. If married, the marriage must be recognized by the Catholic Church. Those who are married civilly or in another Christian tradition are not eligible to serve until their marriage has been recognized by the Church.
  • If single, be striving to live in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church, including living a chaste life and not cohabiting with someone outside of marriage.
  • Not be the parent of the child being baptized. Grandparents may serve as Godparents, provided they meet all of the other requirements.

An unbaptized person or a non-Catholic Christian may not serve as a Godparent for Baptism.
